Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, is a myopia correcting, non-surgical therapy that offers many lifestyle benefits to both children and adults. This therapy involves wearing gas-permeable contact lenses at night, while you sleep, which gently reshape the front surfaces of your eyes.
Here are some of the ways ortho-k can benefit you/your child:
- Ortho-k is designed to correct myopia, short/near-sightedness. It has also been found to reduce the progression of myopia in children.
- You won't have to wear glasses or contacts during the day. This can be a major convenience for those who are tired of being tied down by their glasses or soft contact lenses.
- It is useful for people who engage in sports or outdoor activities, where glasses or contact lenses may be cumbersome or inconvenient.
- Ortho-K can be an alternative to laser surgery for those who are not good candidates or prefer not to undergo the procedure.
To get started with ortho-k, our optometrists will measure the curvatures of your corneas using a special equipment called a corneal topographer. This process helps our optometrists customise your overnight contact lenses and treatment plan.
It's important to note that ortho-k is suitable for people with mild to moderate myopia, as well as those with progressive myopia. However, it's not for everyone, so it's essential to consult with our optometrists to determine if it's right for you/your child.
At Eyekonic Optometry, we're committed to helping our patients achieve their best vision possible.
