Ortho-K: Overnight Vision Correction

Ortho-K (orthokeratology) is a non-surgical vision correction method using custom-designed rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses. These lenses reshape your cornea while you sleep, allowing you to enjoy clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses.

Ideal for those who want to be free from glasses or contacts, Ortho-K is perfect for kids, people working in grimy surroundings, and anyone who finds spectacles inconvenient.  It also helps people with dry eyes who struggle to wear regular contacts.

How Does Ortho-K Work?

Ortho-K lenses gently re shapes the cornea overnight, correcting short sightedness (myopia) and low levels of astigmatism. Corneal topography (a precise mapping of the cornea) ensures a custom fit for each patient, delivering accurate vision correction.

Ortho-K is also effective in controlling myopia progression in children by changing how light focuses on the retina. This unique method helps reduce the progression of short sightedness, unlike regular spectacles or contact lenses

Who is a Good Candidate for Ortho-K?

Ortho-K works best for individuals with mild to moderate myopia (up to -4.00 diopters) and low astigmatism (up to 2.00 diopters). Higher prescriptions may see some improvement, but full correction may not always be possible. Results can vary depending on individual factors like corneal shape and rigidity.

What is the Process?

  1. Initial Consultation: We'll conduct a full eye exam and corneal topography scan to evaluate your eye health and suitability for Ortho-K.
  2. Custom Lenses: Based on your eye measurements, we’ll create custom Ortho-K lenses to reshape your cornea and correct your vision.
  3. Follow-up Visits: After your first night of wearing the lenses, we’ll assess your progress. It usually takes 2-4 visits over the first two months to achieve full correction. overnight wear is required to maintain results.

Benefits of Ortho-K

  • Slows Myopia Progression in Children: Proven to help slow the worsening of short sightedness in kids
  • Clear Vision Without Glasses or Contacts: Enjoy freedom from daytime eyewear
  • Painless & Adjustable: As your prescription changes, Ortho-K lenses can be updated

Cost and Ongoing Care

The initial cost, covers your consultation, fitting process, and one pair of lenses. These lenses typically need replacing every 6-12 months.

Though the upfront cost is higher, Ortho-K is often less expensive in the long run compared to soft contact lenses.

If you have astigmatism, costs may be slightly higher due to the complexity of the lens design.

Important Factors

You'll need 4-6 visits over 3-6 months to complete the initial fitting.

  • Overnight contact lenses must be worn nightly to maintain the results
  • Success rates are high, but individual outcomes can vary
  • Consistent use and care of the lenses are essential for the best results
